Please show me some unusual and interesting spots in Yogyakarta!

I get asked this question from time to time, and there’s one particularly unusual tourist spot that I strongly recommend!
Believe it or not, right on Malioboro Street, the heart of Yogyakarta’s tourism, there’s a place that hosts a cabaret show featuring transgender performers as the main acts.

What’s the Cabaret Show Like?

The RAMINTEN CABARET SHOW mainly features transgender performers in a mimicry show of globally popular music and artists, as well as those popular in Indonesia.
There are also Javanese dance performances by performers dressed in traditional Javanese attire.
Therefore, you can experience traditional culture, modern popular music, and see transgender performers, who often have difficulty taking the main stage in Indonesia due to the Islamic background.
It is a highly recommended spot where you can experience such a variety of cultures at once.
Recent show clips are posted on their official YouTube and Instagram.
If you’d like a sneak peek, be sure to check them out!
However, the interaction with the audience is one of the highlights, so watching it live is several times more enjoyable than watching a video!
Here’s a view from the side seat on the day I went.
Event Dates and Times
This cabaret show is usually held only on Friday and Saturday nights.
There is only one performance, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, lasting about an hour and a half.
Although you can sometimes get in without a reservation, it’s hard to get a good seat, so I recommend booking in advance.
Tickets & Reservations
There are mainly two ways to purchase or reserve tickets.
It’s often sold out, so I strongly recommend booking a ticket to get a good seat.
※If the reserved good seats are full, you will be seated in less ideal spots, such as under the stage at a poor angle or behind a pillar.
Reservation ticket with food and drink: IDR 125,000
※You cannot choose your seat, but they are generally assigned in order of reservation, so it’s best to book early.
Walk-in ticket (admission only): IDR 50,000
Reservations are accepted via the following WhatsApp number.
RESERVATION : 08112652166 (WA)
Food
When you make a reservation, you can choose from several menu options.
The menu changes depending on the season, but it mainly includes common dishes like Nasi Goreng and Mie Goreng.
When I made my reservation, this is what it was like.
I chose the omelet and Kwetiau.

Location
It is located at the southern end of ‘Malioboro Street,’ the tourist center of Yogyakarta (the farthest point from Yogyakarta train station).
The venue for this cabaret show is on the top floor (3rd floor) of Hamzah Batik, the most famous batik souvenir shop in Yogyakarta.

Therefore, it’s a recommended spot to visit in conjunction with souvenir shopping and sightseeing on Malioboro Street.
