I heard there’s a restaurant in Yogyakarta where you can eat royal court cuisine…

Yes, there is a restaurant called Bale Raos that serves dishes that were served to the royal family, known as the Sultan of Yogyakarta.

In this article, I will introduce Bale Raos in detail.

What is Bale Raos?

Bale Raos serves the favorite dishes of past kings. The menu includes special favorite dishes from Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII to Sultan Hamengkubuwono X.
Bale Raos was established on January 23, 2004, at the suggestion of the wife of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, with the aim of preserving the palace’s culture, especially its cuisine.
The History of Bale Raos
At the time, people had a strong tendency to know and prefer foreign cuisine, so traditional dishes were gradually disappearing from circulation and being forgotten by the general public. Therefore, the wife of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X thought it was necessary to revive the traditional menus of Yogyakarta and its surroundings, especially the signature dishes of the Yogyakarta Palace and various traditional snacks.

Bale Raos was established to support tourism activities in Yogyakarta, and in general, culinary tourism in major cities, and to preserve cultural wealth, one of which is to present the diverse cuisine/signature dishes of the Yogyakarta Palace in an attractive package.
Bale Raos started its operations on January 23, 2004, under the leadership of KGPH Hadiwinoto, as an effort to realize the idea of GKR Hemas to open the doors for the general public to know and enjoy the various culinary riches of the Yogyakarta Palace, as well as to preserve the culture.
Location
It is located very close to the Kraton (Royal Palace).

It’s also a great idea to visit in conjunction with a tour of the Royal Palace or Malioboro Street.

Recommended Dishes
Bestik Lidah

This is a braised beef tongue dish, similar to a beef tongue stew.
The menu states that this was a favorite dish of Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX.
Beer Djawa (Javanese Beer)

This was a favorite drink of Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII. Despite its name and appearance, it is a non-alcoholic beverage.
It’s a very fragrant drink made from ginger, cinnamon, and lemongrass.

This is incredibly delicious with its strong ginger aroma. Be sure to give it a try!
Kapiratu

A dish of minced meat wrapped in a thin egg omelet, which I think foreigners would enjoy.
This was a favorite dish of Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII.
Sekur Gurih Set

The staff told me that the set meals with side dishes and rice are also popular at this restaurant.
This is one of them, a beautifully presented dish with both beef and chicken side dishes.
Other Dishes
Nasi Goreng Bale Raos

A dish of fried rice wrapped in a thin omelet, like an omurice. It’s not spicy and is recommended for children and those who are not used to Indonesian food.
Selada Huzar

A salad favored by Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII. It was characterized by a unique sweet and sour dressing.
Daun Pepaya Ikan Asin

A dish characterized by the Ikan Asin on top. I found it to be a bit too salty.
Inside the Restaurant
The restaurant is very spacious. I visited on a Sunday at 6 PM, and it wasn’t too crowded.
The walls are decorated with historical photos, creating a very nice atmosphere.
Gallery at the Entrance
There was a splendid gallery at the entrance.
Beautiful Courtyard
The grounds are very spacious.
Summary
For three people, the bill came to IDR 426,000.
Even with a 16% service charge and tax, it was a very satisfying dinner considering the luxurious interior and the food.

What did you think of the introduction to Bale Raos?
I think it’s a wonderful restaurant where you can have an experience unique to Yogyakarta, the only place in Indonesia where the royal system remains.
