Jogja-sensei!
Are there any recommended local dishes I should try when I visit Yogyakarta?

As for local Yogyakarta cuisine, the ones that often come up are:
– Gudeg
– Sate Klathak
– Bakmi Jawa

This time, I’d like to introduce Gudek in detail, as it’s one I especially recommend.

Yogyakarta has a rich culinary scene, too!
I’m getting more and more excited about my trip to Yogyakarta!

What is Gudeg?
Gudeg is a traditional dish widely loved in the central part of Java Island, including the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java. It is a particularly popular dish in Javanese cuisine and is enjoyed by locals in various settings, from home-cooked meals to special events.

The ingredients for Gudeg are young jackfruit (Nangka) stewed for a long time with coconut milk, Gura merah, and teak leaves (daun jati) with sweet-smelling spices, along with chicken, eggs, and tofu. Gudeg made with young jackfruit can be found at street stalls and restaurants throughout Yogyakarta.
Nowadays, it is also sold in canned form, making it a famous souvenir from Yogyakarta.
Recommended Restaurants Where You Can Eat Gudeg
Gudeg Sagan
This is my personal most recommended place.
I love the Gudeg here the most. Eating Gudeg with Bubur (porridge) is especially delicious.

The Bubur itself has a sweet aroma and pairs perfectly with Gudeg.

You can also order tofu Gudeg and tempeh Gudeg as additional sides, so be sure to try them.

Gudeg Yu Djum
This is the most famous Gudeg place in Yogyakarta and has a chain of restaurants, so there are quite a few branches in the city.

There are probably more than 100 branches in Yogyakarta.

Canned Gudeg from Gudeg Yu Djum

This is a canned version of Gudeg, a representative local dish of Yogyakarta.

For those who like it, this dish with its characteristic sweetness is addictive. The most famous franchise chain, Gudeg Yu Djum, offers a canned version, which allows for long-term storage (about 2 years) and makes for an interesting conversation piece.
Be sure to serve it as a dish to your friends and family.
※Be warned, it’s an acquired taste, so not everyone will like it… lol

Gudeg Bu Hj. Amad
This is also a very famous Gudeg shop, with about 8,000 reviews on Google Maps and a rating of 4.5.

For Those Who Don’t Like Sweet Gudeg! Gudeg Mercon
For those who are not fond of sweet things, there is also a spicy Gudeg called Gudeg Mercon.
This is a popular dish among young students.

I also introduce many other Indonesian dishes, so please check them out!

History and Origin of Gudeg
Gudeg is believed to have been known since the establishment of Yogyakarta city around 1756.
It is said that soldiers clearing the forest in the Mentaok area found many jackfruit and coconut trees. Since there were a large number of soldiers, they processed the jackfruit and coconuts with spices and stirred them with a boat paddle to mix the spices evenly.
This stirring process was called “hanggudeg,” which is said to be the origin of the name of the food “Gudeg.”
