Yogyakarta is home to the Indonesian Institute of the Arts and has a rich tradition of inherited arts such as batik and wayang. In fact, it is one of Indonesia’s leading cities of art.
In this article, I will introduce my visit to the Jogja National Museum, the largest art museum in Yogyakarta.

What is Jogja National Museum?

Jogja National Museum is an art museum located in the city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The museum is dedicated to exhibiting, collecting, preserving, and displaying items related to Javanese culture and art. The museum’s collection includes traditional Javanese paintings and crafts, sculptures, photographs, and historical documents.
The museum is housed in a beautiful building and also has a spacious garden. The exhibition rooms feature beautifully decorated ceilings and walls, as well as traditional Indonesian furniture. The museum also has a restaurant and cafe where you can enjoy a meal or a break.
Jogja National Museum is a valuable place to gain a deep understanding of Javanese culture and is a must-see spot for tourists and art lovers visiting Indonesia. It is located in the city of Yogyakarta and is easily accessible. Through the museum’s exhibits, building, and gardens, you can experience the beauty and depth of Javanese culture.

Exhibition View
When I visited on April 7, 2023, there was an exhibition by an artist named Hanofi.
It seemed that he often creates works that express themes through fabric, and I could feel messages about the expression of empty space created by fabric, or the black world hidden by fabric.

The title of the above work is “Long Mask.”
I felt that it was a work that questioned the long period of self-restraint and mask-wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two planets.
I think it’s impossible in the natural world for planets to stick together, but I feel that in the future, although they won’t stick together, an era of connection with other planets may come…
A work that allows you to ponder such thoughts.

The title of this work is “Vaccine.”
I also get the impression that it’s satirizing the repeated COVID-19 vaccinations.
I was impressed that there were so many works with messages conveyed through art, even on recent events and issues like these.

There were also several works with creative exhibition methods, which were very enjoyable.
This is an art piece that combines a painting and a wheelchair into one exhibition.
Did the old man who was captivated by the painting go into the painting?
Is there a message like that about departure?
If you spend some time in front of the painting, you can ponder what kind of intention the artist had, what kind of colors they used, what kind of lines, or what kind of exhibition method… etc.
You can get lost in such thoughts.

There are not only paintings but also three-dimensional works like the one in the photo above.
The building itself has three floors, so there are many works on display, and you can enjoy it very much.
I felt that I was able to see and enjoy all the works in about an hour and a half.

There are many other works on display like this, so please be sure to visit.
JNM bloc, the Cafe Space on the Spacious Grounds
A cafe space area with restaurants and souvenir shops, seemingly modeled after Jakarta’s m bloc.

This cafe space area also has “mediterranea pizza by Kamil,” by far the most popular restaurant in Yogyakarta.
There are also cafes based on the famous novel “kopi filosofi,” among other things.
Not only the museum but also this cafe space is an attractive facility.

There is also a large stage, and it seems that big events are held regularly.

I’ll also include a map of the facility.
In this way, it is a very large and fulfilling facility where you can spend about half a day.
Finally

Thank you for reading to the end!
