Can You Eat Japanese Food in Yogyakarta?
In Yogyakarta, Japanese food is relatively popular, and there are many Japanese restaurants in the city, including sushi and ramen shops.
However, as far as I know, there are only two restaurants that are actually run by Japanese people: Wagokoro, which I will introduce later, and JJ Tako.

I’ve plotted the main Japanese restaurants on a map, so I hope you find it useful.

This is the only Japanese restaurant in Jogja run by a Japanese owner.
Chicken nanban and shio ramen are recommended. If you’re missing Japanese food, this is the place to go.

This is the most recommended Japanese restaurant in Jogja!
You often run into other Japanese people here, so be sure to visit!

Hikaru Dining Japanese Restaurant
This is a Japanese restaurant that originated in the United States, and it has a wide menu with dishes like sushi, udon, grilled fish, and salads that are not too strongly flavored and are gentle on the body.

The grilled fish and sashimi are a treat! A great shop!
Recommended Menu
Saba Shioyaki (Grilled Mackerel with Salt)

Although it has a slightly unique seasoning, it’s still a delight to be able to eat saba shioyaki!
Sashimi Platter

This is a platter of tuna, salmon, octopus, and mackerel sashimi.
The contents of the sashimi may change slightly depending on the day, but I think tuna and salmon are always available.

The tuna is sometimes not fully thawed, but the salmon is always delicious without fail!
Ebi Ten Udon (Udon with Shrimp Tempura)

A dish with udon and shrimp tempura.
The shrimp tempura is substantial, very delicious, and a great value!
Hakata Ikkousha

This is by far the most authentic ramen shop in Yogyakarta.
There are three branches in Yogyakarta city, but only the one in Demangan serves pork, and a big plus is that they also serve beer!
Recommended Menu
Tonkotsu Ramen

When you come here, the tonkotsu ramen is a must-try!
If you order the special, it comes with plenty of chashu toppings!
Gyoza

This is the only place in Yogyakarta where you can eat authentic pork gyoza!

Don’t worry, they also have chicken gyoza! And it’s very delicious too!
Mini Chashu Don

This mini pork chashu don can be ordered as a set with ramen, and it’s also exquisite!

A recommended dish for when you’re craving pork!
IZAKAYA

As the name suggests, this is an izakaya.
In Yogyakarta, this might be the restaurant with the most Japanese-style interior.
Recommended Menu
Chasoba (Green Tea Soba)

I think this is the only place in Yogyakarta where you can eat chasoba!

A precious dish that makes you feel like you’re in Japan!
Shime Saba (Cured Mackerel)

Shime saba is also a very welcome dish!
It’s authentic shime saba with a satisfyingly delicious taste.
Chicken Nanban

Chicken nanban with a delicious tartar sauce
Or rather, it’s more like karaage with tartar sauce. But it’s very delicious!
