Mediterranea Restaurant by Kamil

This is by far the busiest restaurant in Yogyakarta.
As the name suggests, its concept is Mediterranean cuisine, but it also serves pasta, pizza, steak, and even Indonesian food. If you’re ever unsure where to eat, you could have breakfast, lunch, and dinner here and still not get tired of the vast menu variation.

Gudeg Sagan

When you think of Yogyakarta’s specialty dishes, Gudeg comes to mind.
Gudeg is a sweet stew made from jackfruit (nangka), typically cooked with chicken, boiled eggs, and tofu.
Even if you’ve had a bad experience with Gudeg from a street stall or a hotel, many people who try it here say it’s delicious.

Bale Raos

Bale Raos serves the favorite dishes of past kings. The menu includes special favorite dishes from Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII to Sultan Hamengkubuwono X.

Bale Raos was established on January 23, 2004, at the suggestion of the wife of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, with the aim of preserving the palace’s culture, especially its cuisine.

Since the royal family is involved in its management, the interior is very splendid. You can experience a different, unique atmosphere of Yogyakarta, and its proximity to the Kraton and Malioboro Street makes it perfect for sightseeing.

Recommended Dishes

Bestik Lidah

Bestik Lidah

This is a braised beef tongue dish, similar to a beef tongue stew.

The menu states that this was a favorite dish of Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX.

Beer Djawa (Javanese Beer)

Beer Djawa

This was a favorite drink of Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII. Despite its name and appearance, it is a non-alcoholic beverage.

It’s a very fragrant drink made from ginger, cinnamon, and lemongrass.

This is incredibly delicious with its strong ginger aroma. Be sure to give it a try!

Kapiratu

Kapiratu

A dish of minced meat wrapped in a thin egg omelet, which I think Japanese people would enjoy.

This was a favorite dish of Sultan Hamengkubuwono VIII.

Bakmi Jowo Mbah Gito

This restaurant is recommended for its entertainment value, as its exterior and interior are heavily influenced by Javanese culture.
Ordering the Javanese specialty Bakmi Godog or teh poci is a great choice, as it comes with a large sugar cube (sugar cubes are also famous in Central Java, with varieties like gula merah and gula aren).

Recommended Dish

  1. Bakmi Godog
    Bakmi Godog
    Price: IDR 32K
A type of Yogyakarta’s specialty, Mie Jawa, this dish is like a champon with less broth, using slightly thicker noodles.

Sixsenses Kitchen

This restaurant is famous for its Spanish cuisine, and its interior and exterior are also distinctive.
The exterior is a Western, Dutch-style building with a very grand entrance, but inside, surprisingly, there’s a building with magnificent Javanese architectural carvings, creating a wonderful atmosphere that blends Javanese and Western civilizations.

It’s a dish that combines Chicken Nanban and curry.
Please give it a try!

Recommended Menu

The restaurant’s top recommendations are cheese and pizza.

Pizza di Burrata (87K)

The pizza topped with Burrata cheese is one of my favorite menu items.

The combination of the crispy yet chewy pizza crust, tomato sauce, and Burrata cheese is exquisite.
You have to try it at least once.
