For many people living in Yogyakarta, there’s a common problem they face.
That is… “I miss Japanese food!!”
In this article, I will introduce the only Japanese restaurant run by a Japanese owner in Yogyakarta that solves this problem for the Japanese residents here.

What is Wagokoro?
It is a Japanese restaurant with a Japanese owner located on Jalan Kaliurang in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
There are many Japanese restaurants in Yogyakarta, but most of them are run by Indonesians and the taste is slightly adapted for the Indonesian palate.
Among them, as far as I know, the only Japanese-run restaurant is “Wagokoro.”
Since its opening in January 2022, it has become a relaxing oasis for Japanese residents in Yogyakarta.
Menu

Chicken Nanban

Price
IDR 39K
Mini size: IDR 29K
The chicken nanban at Wagokoro is incredibly delicious!
It’s been a classic menu item since the restaurant opened, and I recommend the “Chicken Nanban” for first-time visitors.
The combination of the Indonesians’ favorite fried food “Ayam Goreng” ✕ the Japanese “Tartar” ✕ the sweet and sour “Nanban sauce”
is what makes this dish so amazing.
It’s a popular dish not only with Japanese people but also with Indonesians.
Wagokoro Ramen (Shio Ramen)

Price
IDR 35K
Mini size: IDR 25K
A ramen with a prominent salt and dashi flavor! It’s a bowl that will make you exclaim, “So comforting!”
There are many ramen shops in Yogyakarta, but as far as I know, this is the only place where you can eat a salt-based ramen.
A light yet deeply flavorful shio ramen! It’s exquisite!
Curry Rice

Price
IDR 35K
Mini size: 25K
Isn’t Japanese-style curry one of the dishes you miss when you live abroad for a long time?
At Wagokoro, they also have the classic Japanese-style curry rice.
The curry tastes just like the home-style curry you’d eat in Japan.
It’s a great dish that they offer for a cheap price of 35K.
Oyakodon

Price
IDR 35K
Mini size: IDR 25K
Oyakodon with a Japanese-style dashi flavor.
A deeply flavorful dish with onions simmered in dashi.
TEPPEI

Price
IDR 39K
This is a great value dish that combines Wagokoro’s popular classic menu items “Chicken Nanban” and “Curry Rice.”
Especially for big eaters, it’s a double punch of juicy chicken nanban and rich curry!!
A dish that will satisfy both your stomach and your soul.
By the way, the menu item is named after me, which is a bit embarrassing.
It came about because I was asked to taste it during the menu’s trial and error phase, and I gave it my seal of approval… lol
Wagokoro Chahan (Fried Rice)

Price
IDR 35K
Jumbo size: IDR 40K
A dish that will make you exclaim, “This is chahan, not nasi goreng!”
In particular, the chicken meat miso topping on the fried rice is incredibly juicy and flavorful, making for an exquisite fried rice.
Other Recommendations
Natto

“Natto”!! The ultimate lifesaver for Japanese residents in Yogyakarta!
This is the only place you can buy it in Yogyakarta.
It’s genuine natto. If you’re missing natto, this is the place to go!!
I always buy about three packs to take home. They also take orders for natto via WhatsApp.
Raw Eggs Safe for Raw Consumption
Don’t you miss tamago kake gohan (raw egg on rice) when you’re living abroad?
There are no Japanese supermarkets in Yogyakarta, and it’s difficult to get eggs that are safe to eat raw.
They sell them in 500g units.
